so, the whole, "society sucks" bit. i'm really not sure what to say. it feels like such a loaded subject, even inside my head. i just don't like the way things are. i don't like the way our government is run, and after this coming up election, i'm still not going to like it, regardless of who wins the "head doof-cake of the planet" award, and gets to sit at this crappy nation's helm. it's not going to change anything.
and this is why i hate politics so much. i used to think that i hated it because it didn't affect my life at all. 'cause, from a younger person's vantage point, it really doesn't. now, though, i think i've redirected the discontent. because no matter who we elect, no matter who gets to be in charge of more or less the free world, that doesn't change anything important. the rich will still get richer. and, of course, the poor will still get poorer. our entire culture will still be a horrible rat-race towards success, which will invariably be defined by capital. which is total crap.
george bush, al gore, it doesn't matter. everyone will still be competing with each other. everyone will still be aspiring for the bigger piece of pie, trying to "make it" in an "every man for himself," cut-throat society.
everybody will still look, covetously, at the $350,000 BMW driving down the street, and worst of all, everyone will still go, "oooh," and "nice..." and "that's a hot car." and everyone will still forget, or just be in total ignorance of, the fact that that car could fucking feed 15, literally 15 impoverished families for a whole frickin' year. and for what? why, on God's green earth, does that selfish prick sitting behind the wheel, think that he/she deserves it? because he worked hard? because she went to a good college, got a good degree?
hm. that's odd. i'm going to college. i'm gonna get a good degree. am i ever going to be able to afford a $350k car? hell, am i going to be able to afford a $350k house? no. why? because marine bio pays dick? no, it wouldn't matter if i graduated with a degree in bus/econ. then why? how can this bastard behind the wheel pull it off? why do all us poor schmucks watching him get envious? we think that he earned it. and if we don't think that, we just don't think of the obvious.
because his parents were rich, and left a large inheritance. perhaps because her family has always been well-off, "ahead of the game," successful. and of course, daddy's company just made a big labor contract with a remote third-world country, and will now only have to pay 15 cents an hour, boy will he save millions! that's using the old noodle, dad! so he'll decide to splurge and buy his favorite offspring a third of a million dollar peice of useless shit automobile.
"no," you may say, "it's not all like that, nate." and if that's what you think, i'm sorry. prove me wrong. for crying out loud, please prove me wrong. give me a reason why mr. asshole should be driving a car worth more money than the average american will make in ten years. give me a reason why we're still driving fossil-fuel cars in the first place, when it's so much cheaper, and would be so much better for both the environment, and general health of humans all over the earth, to start utilizing other methods to power our automobiles. don't have the technology? bullshit. we put a man on the moon, a foreign body 240,000 miles away from earth, 35 years ago, and we can't yet think of a better way to make our cars run? give me a reason why we're still driving cars at all, why we haven't found some great public transportation service, or some combination thereof to satisfy everyone's needs.
